Treatment Options

Basically there are two different therapeutic approaches to prostate cancer with a variety of possibilities:

1. Curative Treatment
A condition for this is the limitation of the cancer to the prostate.
Currently accepted treatment options are:
• Brachytherapy (interstitial radiation)
• External beam radiation
• Surgical removal by radical prostatectomy

In early stages of prostate cancer all methods will achieve comparable good results. In advanced tumors, radiotherapeutic procedures will be superior to surgery in terms of outcome.

There are currently several interesting procedures for treatment of prostate cancer with limited experience. However, due to a lack of evidence regarding long-term effectiveness, these procedures can not be considered standard therapy yet.
These experimental procedures include:
• HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound)
• Cryotherapy

2. Palliative Treatment
There should be a reasonable ratio between the effects and side effects in cancer treatment if cure can not be gained. Palliative therapy aims to ameliorate symptoms and to avoid or reduce further spread or metastasis.

Available options are:
• Hormonal Therapy
• Chemotherapy
• External irradiation

On the following pages you will find an overview of the currently accepted treatment options for local confined or advanced prostate cancer. We have purposely focused only on options with comprehensive data on long-term effectiveness.
